So we went bowling at the Rock N' Bowl last night and my friend was going to request some music and I told her to ask if they had any Tribe Called Quest. So she came back and said they don't play hip hop on Saturday nights. No biggie. But about 10 minutes later I hear Ghettochip Malfunction by Beck. Now you can not pidgeonhole Beck. He throws it all in there. But there are some songs of his that pretty much are hip hop. So I'm like, they won't play hip hop but they'll play this?
So I go up to the guy and say that to him and he's just like "Yup." So then I said, "A guy rapping over a breakbeat with a DJ scratching isn't hip hop?" And he goes "Yup." And for some reason this really ticked me off. I went on a little rant about it. My friends just said let it go. But for some reason it continues to bug me. Maybe if the guy wasn't such a dick about it and didn't just blow me off when I tried talking to him I wouldn't have gotten so upset. Or maybe because it brought up memories of a discussion I had with a rep from a local alternative rock station that plays Beastie Boys and House of Pain all the damn time and I got fed up when they started playing Eminem. And that idiot had the nerve to tell me that Beastie Boys aren't hip hop!
